About ESE / IES

Engineering Services Examination ESE is the exam for recruiting engineers appointed as Class-1 officer who can work for the government of India conducted by Union Public Services Commission (UPSC). Because of its high standard selection procedure, it is being considered as the toughest exam in India.

IES officers are able to administer activities and functions of a broad segment of the public sector economy, which constitutes of Power, Indian Railways, Central Engineering Service, roads, manufacturing, Central Water engineering, inspection, supply,  Defence service of Engineers, Telecommunications, etc.

Based on their engineering branch and the service or cadre they are appointed in bureaucrats perform the task. They can move to any agency, organization, cadre, department, ministry or PSU of the Government of India. IES officers carry high respect and status in the society and their career moves smoothly towards a more advanced state. The first offered position is of Asst. Executive engineer and the hierarchy ends at the post of chairman.

This Examination constitutes a written test followed by an interview for the personality test. Depends upon the examination cut-off merit, recruitment of qualified applicants is performed under the following branches :

  1. Electrical Engineering
  2. Mechanical Engineering
  3. Civil Engineering 
  4. Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering

Eligibility for IES/ESE

- Nationality

An applicant must be one of the following:

(a) an Indian citizen, or
(b)a subject of Nepal, or
(c)  a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) any Tibetan refugee with the intention of permanently settling in India came before 1st January 1962, or
(e) any person who has immigrated from Burma, or East African countries of Uganda, Ethiopia or Vietnam, Kenya, Malawi, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, United Republic of Tanzania,  Zambia, Zaire, and of Indian origin with the intention of setting in India.

An applicant belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall have a certificate of eligibility assigned by the Govt. of India.

- Age Limit

An applicant for this exam must have attained at least the age of 21 years and the maximum age for applying for the exam is 30 years. 

Upper age limit relaxation is provided as per the government rules  to the candidates listed below:

  • 3 years addition for OBC candidates.
  • 4 years addition in case of Defense Services either personnel disabled in operations during hostilities in a disturbed area and released as a consequence or with any foreign country thereof
  • 5 years addition  for candidates belonging to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe
  • 5 years addition if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989
  • 5 years addition in case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1 August and have been released either on completion of assignment or assignment which is due and to be completed within a year from 1 August otherwise than by way of dismissal or on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service on invalidment.
  • 5 years addition in case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of five years Military Service as on 1 August.
  • 10 years addition in case of blind, deaf-mute and orthopaedically handicapped persons. 

There is no age relaxation admissible to Ex-Servicemen and Commissioned Officers including ECOs/SSCOs who are released on own request.

Educational qualifications 

An applicant willing to apply for ESE should hold a degree from a recognized university or equivalent in Engineering.

Special subjects such as M.Sc degree or its equivalent with Electronics, Radio Engineering or Radio Physics, Wireless Communications also acceptable for certain posts/services.

Those candidates who are appearing at their engineering degree or equivalent examination are also eligible to compete for this exam.

Those candidates who are qualifying on the result of the written part of the Examination will be required to fill detailed application form along with submitting the proof of passing the requisite examination.  

Examination Pattern

The ESE written examination comprises of 3 stages conducted as follows:

Stage-I: It is a preliminary stage examination which consists of only objective type questions for the selection of applicants for the second stage.

Stage-II:  It is the main stage comprises of conventional type papers. Those candidates who get qualify in Stage-I only they can appear in Engineering Services (Main/Stage-II) Examination.

Stage-III: It is the third stage i.e. Personality Test which holds 200 marks and is conducted only for those candidates who qualify the written examination.

Marks distribution and Paper pattern

Stage-I: The Preliminary Stage is an objective type (multiple choices) question paper consists of two papers that hold total of 500 marks which are conducted in a different session. 

Paper 1 (General Studies and Engineering Aptitude) carries a total of 100 questions (200 marks) and the duration of the exam is 2 hours.

Paper 2 (Engineering Discipline Paper) carries a total of 150 Questions(300 Marks) and the duration of the exam is 3 Hours.

Candidates who qualify in Preliminary Exam only those are eligible for Stage 2.

Stage-II The main stage is a conventional type question paper consist of two type papers that hold a total of 600 marks which are conducted in a different session.

Paper 1 (Engineering Discipline 1)  carries a total of 5 to 8 Question(300 Marks), and the duration of the paper is 3 Hours.

Paper 2 (Engineering Discipline 2) carries a total of 5 to 8 Question(300 Marks), and the duration of the paper is 3 Hours.

Candidates who qualify in the Preliminary Exam and Mains Exam only those are eligible for Stage 3.

Stage 3: Applicants who successfully completes the written examination go through a personality screening test which is also known as interview round. It carries 200 marks.

After clearing all 3 stages the applicant is considered for the final merit list of ESE exam provided by UPSC.

 * Note: For every wrongly attempted question, there is a negative marking of 0.33 marks.*

 ESE 2020 SYLLABUS

Part A: General English: To test the candidate’s understanding of English and workman like use of words, the question paper in General English is designed.

 Part B: General Studies: The General studies paper includes relating to social, economic and industrial national and international current issues, knowledge of current events and more. The paper will also include Questions related to History of India and Geography of nature are also included in paper for which candidates does not need any special study, they can answer them with everyday observation, experience and awareness from news and blogs. ESE Application Fees

Female/SC/ST/ PH are spared from payment of the fee. All the other candidates have to pay Rs. 200/- as application fees for ESE.

STEP 6 is uploading a scanned copy of your signature and photograph.

STEP 7 is selecting the exam centers. 

STEP  8 is final agree to the declaration and submitting the form

STEP  9 is taking a hard copy of the application form for future references.

Civil engineering departments where you can apply are AEE in Border Road Engg. Services GR-A, AEE in P&T building works Group-A Services, Central Engineering Service (Roads) Group-A, Indian Railway Stores Service, Central Water Engineering Service, Indian Defense Service of Engineers, Indian Ordnance Factories Services, Indian Railway Service of Engineers, Indian Railway Stores Service and Central Engineering Service.

B. Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering departments where you can apply are Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers, Indian Railway Stores Service, Indian Defense Service of Engineers(Electrical Posts), Central Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Service (Electrical Post), Indian Supply Service Group A (Electrical Posts), Assistant Naval Store Officer Grade-I in Indian Navy, Central Power Engineering Service (Electrical Post), Indian Ordnance Factories Services, Indian Naval Armament Service andAssistant Executive Engineer in Corps of EME, Ministry of Defense.

 C. Mechanical Engineering
